Tag;; Saved For Lily!!!
Severus decided it was a very good time for him to go and start on some early studying. Term hadn't officially started, but he knew that he would have to know a few things toward the beginning of the school year, and he had some over the summer homework he hadn't quite finished yet. He sat down at a table, with a few books spread out acrossed it. By a few books, we're talking about, like, ten. He opened them all up, and started to work on the essay that was assigned over the summer about werewolves. Last year, Severus had found out about Lupin and his friends. The illegal animagus's, and Lupin himself being a werewolf. He hadn't told anyone, and he didn't know why. He could get them expelled that way, but he could never get himself to do it.
A bunch of little kids started to stare at him. Being a true Slytherin, he sneered at them. He didn't like people, and barely liked any of his 'friends'. The only friend he ever got along with was Lily, whom he doesn't speak to anymore. It wasn't his fault though. He didn't mean to call her, well, a bad name. It sort of, was in spur of the moment. He apologized many times, but she never accepted his apology. He hopes that this year, she will accept his apology finally, and that they'll be friends again. He hasn't been the same without her.
He looked at the books spread out across the table. All of them filled with knowledge that didn't seem useful, but in the end, is very useful. He didn't see the need for all these books, but it helped him with his essay, so he kept them. He flipped a few pages in a book, and scribbled something down on his parchment. He was surprised when his teacher could read his handwriting, since it just looked like chicken scratch to him. As long as he got a good grade on it, he'd be happy. That's all he though.

Pure luck, she deemed it, as she strode to the library from the Herbology greenhouse, number two to be exact. She'd caught Professor Sprout just before she'd closed up, and was lucky enough to get her hands on a copy of Magical Water Plants of the Mediterranean (on loan, of course.) Lily knew the Gryffindor Common Room would be too noisy to enjoy her new book in peace, so she contented herself with going to the library. Smiling to herself, the girl found a table off in the corner, away from a couple of students in the front. Not that she didn't like them, no, but she was extremely shy and tended to keep to herself, especially around her friends. Though she was watning to enjoy her new book, she couldn't get this Muggle song out of her head...
Opening her book, she tucked a strand of fiery hair that had fallen loose from her ponytail behind her ear. Her clear emerald eyes focused on the task before her, she appeared to be in extreme concentration; in actuality she was still replaying the song in her head.
'When I find myself in times of trouble,vMother Mary comes to me. Speaking words of wisdom, let it be.'
She was so immersed in her "reading" and the song, that she didn't notice who she happened to sit next to until she looked up innocently and saw him. At first, she blinked, but then hurt entered her eyes and she drew back a bit. "Oh, hello Severus." she murmured.

Severus looked up at the sound of someone speaking his name in a quiet mumble. He saw a fiery, red headed girl, with amazing emerald eyes. He blushed a little at the sight of her, and said back to her, just as quietly, "Hello Lily." He didn't know what to say to her, and well, she wouldn't want to talk to him anyway. He knew that he would never live down last year, and that she was still mad at him. He just sighed and wrote something else down that he found in his book.
He looked up from his studying after a while, and decided it'd be good to start a conversation. He thought for a minute, and said, "What are you reading?" He faked interest, but since he was very good at faking and lieing, it seemed like he was really interested. Even Lily couldn't tell the difference from his lies, and the truth. He waited for a reply by playing with his quill. He was wiggling it, until, a few moments later, it flew out of his hands, and hit the books behind him. He turned his head around slowly, and then turned his head back to face Lily. He didn't change his expression, but in his mind, he was saying, 'You're such an idiot. And quite a klutz I might add. Stupid Severus. Stupid stupid Severus.'

The hurt that Lily had thought receded suddenly flew forefront into her mind and heart. The memory of her best friend's hurtful words and terrible sneer made her heart throb terribly. Biting down on her lip slightly and trying to avoid looking at him for fear of bursting into tears, Lily simple gave the tiniest of smiles and concentrated on her book. The words were blurry and meant nothing to her, however; she couldn't concentrate on anything besides the pain and her own stupidity for not looking before she made herself comfortable beside the boy she used to trust.
He was speaking again and Lily looked up, blinking a bit in surprise. Swallowing a lump in her throat, she lifted the book up a bit so he could see the title. "Magical Water Plants of the Mediterranean ." she said in a low voice, her emerald eyes still not resting on him. Instead she looked at the title, too. "I erm, borrowed it from Professor Sprout." Lily sighed lightly, trying to regain her composure, but it was far out of reach at the moment. "And you? What're you reading?"

Sev gave a weak smile. He looked down at all the books that lay in front of him. "DADA homework. From over the summer," he said. He just thought again. What if Lily knew about James's secret. The one which is that he's an illegal animagus. Would that make any difference in their friendship? He started arguing with himself on if he should tell her or not. None of his arguement appearing on his face. He sighed, finally deciding not to tell her, and scribbled something else down on his parchment. He didn't have anything to say back to the girl, and felt an awkward silence coming on.

He answered her briefly, but not rudely, and Lily gave a small, disappointed sigh. Maybe he'd changed his mind; maybe he'd meant the horrible things after all, and he had no desire to be her friend again. Maybe that was Lily's worst fear. Her half a year without him had been absolutely terrible. Lily and Severus had done everything together, and she'd counted on him in so many ways for so many things. She continued to worry her bottom lip with her teeth and stare at her book, but not really seeing the words. There was a steady ache in her heart...
Suddenly, Lily stood, the girl that Severus must know as his best friend becoming clear in the Gryffindor's persona. "I should find another table." she babbled, pushing her hair out of her face and holding the book close to her. "I'm just scatterbrained and, I'm sorry, I just-" she sigh, looking small and defeated. "I'll just leave."

Severus stood up a few seconds after she did. "No!" he said a little loudly," I mean no. Please." He looked at her. "I just have one question for you Lily. Why won't you accept my apology?" he asked her. He usually wasn't one to come right out with things, but this time he felt it was necessary. He looked at her with pleading eyes to answer his question. He was tired of her pushing it off, and he wanted to know the truth, right now. He didn't know how he would get it out of her if she didn't answer, but he knew that he had to some way. He needed to find out the truth.

Lily watched him curiously, surprised when he stood up and asked her not to leave. Maybe this was it for them. Maybe they could be friends again. The ache in her heart began to recede a bit and hope entered her body. And then the question. The question that she knew he'd had for the longest time; the question that sometimes she even asked herself. Emerald eyes wide and hurt, she looked at him for a long moment before sinking into her chair and giving a low, defeated sigh. "I don't know." she confessed, averting her eyes. "It's just... you're my best friend Severus, and it hurt so badly, I-" she paused to finally meet his eyes, her emeralds glistening with unshed tears. "I thought I could trust you."

He sat down in his original seat. "Lily. I didn't mean to!" he said, sadness filling up his eyes, "It was a stupid mistake. If it wasn't for Potter, and his friends, none of that wouldn't have happened. We'd still be friends, and we'd still be having secret meetings, so that we could talk. I want us to have that again. How many times can I say I'm sorry?" he asked, not anger, but sadness taking over him. His voice never rised once, and that made him very proud. He's always raised his voice when in a conversation like this, but he managed to keep it down.

Lily shook her head. She hated seeing her dear friend like this, but she remembered that day, that pain clearly. Emerald eyes were full of tears that she refused to let fall. "I was only trying to help you, Severus." she reminded him, clutching the book tightly to her, like a lifeline. "And you hurt me... how angry you got, it frightened me." Lily tried not to think about the fire in his eyes, or the way James had looked just as horrified as he was. James had stuck up for her, then, and she was surprised but grateful. In that moment, her friend and her enemy switched places. Lily tried not to think about how much she missed Severus or how much she could have... would have loved him, if only... A tear slid down her cheek and she didn't bother to wipe it away.

"Lily.." was all he was able to say. He so dearly wanted to wipe her tear away. He wanted to tell her everything was going to be all right. But that wasn't the truth. He knew everything wasn't going to be all right. He knew that she was never going to be the same. And he knew that he couldn't live with himself like this. He wished that things had been different. He wished that his anger hadn't gotten the best of him, and he wished that James hadn't done what he did. As if getting pubicly humiliated wasn't enough for one day, he also had to lose his best friend, his only friend. He tried again to talk to Lily. "Lily," he attempted, "my anger got the best of me. I had just gotten pubicly humiliated...and I don't know why those words left my mouth. I didn't mean anything that I ever said to you, especially that one word. Do you honestly think that I would mean that? I didn't. And I can't stand seeing you like this Lily." He looked down at the table, and let out a sigh. He wished he could turn back time. But that was very impossible. He needed to show her how much he cared for her.

Lily shuddered slightly as his words, feeling smaller and more helpless that she had in a long time. Severus had always been her dearest friend, her defender, her protector. Even through the seperation of the houses, they had remained close and didn't mind the blood difference. Now he was apologizing and she wanted so badly to forgive him for everything. But something in her mind warned her against it, and she knew that while maybe they could be friends to some extent, they couldn't ever be the way they used to. Blinking tears out of her emerald green eyes, Lily wasted no time in standing up and throwing her arms around Severus. The redheaded Gryffindor was a lot shorter than her Slytherin counterpart, but that had never mattered in the past. Trying desperately to hold back tears, Lily sniffled once, her arms wound tight around his waist. "I missed you, Severus." she managed, her voice low.

Severus, a little taken a back by the sudden change of heart, put his hands around the petite girl, returning the hug. He just smiled, not saying anything back. He really did miss her too. Too much to even comprehend. He couldn't find the words to tell her how he felt while she was mad at him. So, he decided with just an, "I missed you too," and waited for the red head to move.

Lily felt him return the hug and squeezed him close to her for a moment more, before pulling back and smiling, wiping her eyes quickly. She tried to keep her head turned slightly so he wouldn't see the slightly faded bruise on her cheek. It had been there for the past few days, and since they hadn't been too close before he probably hadn't noticed. The last thing she wanted was to draw attention to it, so she resolved for pulling her hair forward and patting his shoulders. "It's been terrible, really." she managed, the tears finally receding a bit but still glistening on her cheeks. "And poor you, have you been alright?"

He didn't answer her question. He instead, turned her cheek, to the side that she had been trying to hide. He moved the hair, and saw the bruise that had been placed on her cheek. "What happened?" he asked, with much concern flickering in his eyes. He sat her down next to him, and waited for a reply. He wasn't going to answer any questions until his was answered. Her safety was more important to him than any other conversation in the world. Even James couldn't make Severus not think of Lily's safety, and he wished that she would know that.
